Ayldarzi
The Ayldarzi are a faerie species originating in the Feywild—descendants of crepuscular, semi-nocturnal, predatory fae who evolved into a more diurnal and socially complex people. They are biologically similar to elves but with distinct anatomical and magical traits.
Physically, they stand between 5½ and 6 feet tall and possess two natural forms of which they can change between at will:
- Fiadraen form— means “The Wild Transformed.” (From fiadh + poetic suffix -raen suggesting rebirth or shifting.) Pronounced FEE-ah-drayn. Covered in tiny iridescent, scale-like skin that refracts light (granting minor physical protection), with four retractable, dragonfly-like wings. Their teeth become sharper, canines elongate, and their pupils are capable of becoming fully slit.
- Elven form – Humanoid, with slightly sharper teeth, semi-slit pupils, and hair and irises that often carry 'unusual' hues (ie purple hair, pink eyes). They still have access to their wings in this form.
Ayldarzi are effectively immortal, practically ceasing to age physically past the equivalent of about 25-30 human years. They do not die of old age, only from violence, accidents, or disease. They grow at roughly the same rate as humans. When they are born, they do not have wings. The wings begin to develop around the age of 4, and most Ayldarzi know how to fly by the time they reach 5 years old. At this age, they also undergo a significant physiological change—developing a different digestive system where magic takes care of nutrient processing. This magical digestion means they no longer need to urinate or defecate unless they are ill or intoxicated.
They are primarily carnivorous but enjoy dairy, sweets, fruit, and starchy foods like bread and potatoes. Vegetables are treated as garnish or decoration. Hunting—especially of dangerous prey—is a cultural pastime.
They tend to be more comfortable in cooler climates and have a higher tolerance to freezing temperatures.
Males tend toward duller coloration, while females display brighter colors. Their society mirrors elven culture in grace and artistry but retains a wild, instinct-driven edge from their predatory heritage.
They are native exclusively to the Feywild; in the mortal world, they usually exist only as exiles or survivors of magical displacement events. The Ayldarzi have a strong connection to magic, particularly plant-based and fey-related magic.
Culture and Evolution
Originally, Ayldarzi evolved from dawn and dusk hunting wetland predators, which is evident in their dark vision and the predatory aspects of their physical forms. However, over time, they have become primarily diurnal, though their crepuscular, semi-nocturnal traits remain a part of their identity.
Societal Roles
Culturally, the Ayldarzi share many similarities with elven societies, particularly in body shape and certain social structures, but their fey origins imbue them with a more whimsical and potentially dangerous edge.
Given their long lives and deep connection to magic, Ayldarzi society has a complex structure with roles that often revolve around magical study, physical priming, hunting, and the preservation of their race's culture and history. The fact that they do not age past a certain point and are immortal unless killed by external factors creates a society where wisdom and experience are highly valued, and individuals may take on various roles throughout their long lives.
Behavior and Combat Style
In combat, Ayldarzi are agile and strategic, using their flight and natural camouflage to their advantage. Their ability to switch between forms may give them versatility in combat situations, allowing them to adapt to different threats. Given their hunting background, they often prefer ambush tactics or other strategies that involve outmaneuvering their opponents over direct confrontation.
Social Structure and Relationships
Many Ayldarzi place a high value on family and close friendships, with a strong importance of loyalty and dedication within their culture. However, this is not always the case, and others are entirely out for themselves with few strings attached. Ayldarzi are native to the northern Feywild, primarily residing in the Unseelie Court and Northern Equinox, though they are adaptable and can be found in Seelie lands also.
